Révélé par sa couverture sur le magazine anglais Mixmag, ABSOLUTE. est désormais encensé par les médias. Inspiré par les plus grands du milieu de la musique électronique, le DJ aux cheveux jaunes fluo reprend le flambeau et propose dans son nouvel album des titres aussi bien techno que house, sans oublier d’y ajouter une touche de disco !

Electro News – Salut Absolute ! Tout d’abord, félicitations pour la sortie de Wonderland, ta nouvelle mixtape ! Peux-tu nous en dire un peu plus ? Quelles étaient tes inspirations et comment ce projet a-t-il pris vie ?
ABSOLUTE. – Tout ça a commencé au début du confinement. Au même titre que d’autres DJs, j’avais l’impression que ma créativité était réduite à néant… À la base, ma carrière devait prendre un tournant décisif : je venais de faire un mix pour mon tout premier Mixmag Lab, j’allais partir en tournée avec 808 State, et puis le confinement a été annoncé le week-end ou ça devait arriver. J’ai donc contacté Mike Monday pour un cours, et ça a vraiment reboosté ma créativité. Et puis j’ai composé 100 titres en deux semaines. C’était énorme, j’ai battu mon record ! C’est ça qui a constitué la base de mon album Wonderland. Pour moi, composer un album allait me permettre de traverser cette pandémie.
“En composant, je me sentais libre, j’ai eu l’impression de m’évader et de refaire partie intégrante de quelque chose, j’ai pu ressentir cette joie et cette euphorie pendant un petit moment… C’était comme un antidote, finalement.”, nous explique Absolute.

D’ailleurs, il s’est passé une coïncidence assez incroyable quand je produisais cet album. À l’époque, je faisais beaucoup de sons un peu rave hardcore, car c’est un style qui m’inspirait énormément. Quand je composais, j’ai appris que l’immeuble dans lequel je vivais et je composais avait anciennement abrité un club légendaire, le Wonderland Arena, dans lequel jouaient Carl Cox, The Prodigy et Frankie Knuckles il y a 30 ans ! Pendant l’apogée de l’époque rave, ce club était vraiment une référence. J’ai eu l’impression que l’énergie d’il y a 30 ans avait imprégné les murs. J’ai eu l’opportunité de réinterpréter cette musique et la faire découvrir à une nouvelle génération. C’est comme si l’univers me disait que j’étais sur la bonne voie…
Avant tout, cet album est quelque chose de complet avec un début et une fin. Les gens peuvent avoir leur propre espace pour danser, peu importe où ils sont ! Je suis persuadé que c’était nécessaire étant donné ce qu’il se passait dans le monde à cette époque… Ça me rend heureux de savoir que les gens vont l’écouter en live dans les clubs et les festivals cet été !
Tu as récemment fait la couverture de Mixmag. Comment était-ce ? Est-ce que ça a eu un impact sur ta carrière et sur ta vie en tant qu’artiste ?
En vrai, faire la couverture de Mixmag a toujours été sur ma liste des choses à faire. Je savais que je devais y figurer une fois dans ma carrière, mais je ne savais pas que ça arriverait si vite ! Ça m’a beaucoup surpris, et ça m’a surtout remonté le moral. J’écrivais beaucoup pendant le confinement sans savoir ce que les gens allaient penser et s’ils allaient en avoir quelque chose à faire. Mais c’était plutôt réconfortant de savoir que l’un des plus grands magazines de musique au monde me voulaient sur leur couverture après avoir entendu ma mixtape, et qu’ils croyaient en mon projet. Ça a beaucoup aidé en termes de bookings, et plus simplement avec le fait d’être pris plus au sérieux. En plus, c’est très spécial de savoir que les artistes queer ont eux aussi leur place en couverture…

En parlant de la scène queer et LGBTQ+, que penses-tu que les artistes engagés comme toi apportent au monde de la musique électronique et comment souhaites-tu inspirer ceux qui t’écoutent ?
Je pense qu’il s’agit avant tout de créer des espaces safe et accueillants pour les gens. Qu’ils puissent se sentir en sécurité et être eux-mêmes, sans préjudice. En même temps, j’ai les cheveux jaunes fluo ! [rires] Pour moi, c’est une manière de me souvenir de ne jamais laisser ma lumière s’éteindre et de ne jamais laisser personne me diminuer, pour rien au monde. Les meilleurs moments, c’est quand tout le monde est authentique, à l’aise et libre.
Spotify Londres t’a demandé de créer une playlist spécialement pour le mois des fiertés 2021. Tu ne pouvais choisir que 50 titres. Comment as-tu fait ta sélection ? Y avait-il un message que tu voulais véhiculer par le biais de ton choix final ?
Je voulais que la playlist ait un sens, mais aussi un flow. J’ai puisé mon inspiration dans le temps où j’étais un promoteur dans des clubs queer. Faire partie de la communauté queer et de la scène underground gay depuis un long moment a aussi été d’une grande aide ! On pouvait difficilement voir nos amis et nos familles de cœur, nous avions plus que jamais besoin de profiter de chaque moment. J’espère que ma musique a pu aider.
“Je voulais créer des moments qui puissent libérer les gens et transformer chaque instant en célébration. J’essaye de créer un impact positif, tout en m’amusant. Pour ça, la musique est un medium très puissant, ça m’a beaucoup apporté. Ça me rend fier de savoir que je peux avoir un impact.”, nous explique le DJ anglais.
Quels sont tes plans pour l’été 2021 ? Y a-t-il des festivals, des concerts que tu as hâte de faire ?
Oui, j’ai un programme assez prometteur ! Beaucoup de choses ont été annulées ou reprogrammées. Mais dans le cadre de notre série de la Pride, j’ai déjà fait un mix avec The Blessed Madonna, ainsi qu’un mix pour Annie Mac pour faire hommage au Wonderland Arena et son histoire. J’ai aussi fait mon premier show en live à l’Islington Assembly Hall. C’était un moment très spécial pour moi, et aussi très effrayant dans un sens. Mais j’ai été entouré de tant d’amour et d’énergie, ça m’a beaucoup touché. Je dois aussi jouer avec Honey Dijon et faire ma tournée avec 808 State… Je pense que la tournée en Amérique va avoir lieu l’année prochaine, et j’ai aussi quelques shows en Écosse. Bref, j’ai de quoi faire jusqu’à septembre au moins.. Je suis super pressé de pouvoir répandre ma tornade jaune fluo !
Wow, sacré programme ! Ça ne te fait pas peur de recommencer les lives ?
J’avoue que j’étais un peu anxieux à l’idée de retourner en live. Ça fait longtemps que je suis DJ, je sais quand même comment faire un bon set ! Mais jouer en live, ça reste quand même assez effrayant. Maintenant que c’est passé, je suis très pressé de recommencer. D’ailleurs, je suis allé à la marche des fiertés samedi, et c’était assez ahurissant d’être entouré d’autant de monde, d’autant plus que certains m’ont reconnu et m’ont demandé de prendre des photos. Mais ça va aller ! J’ai confiance et quand tout réouvrira, je serais prêt à jouer et à être entouré.
As-tu prévu de venir jouer en France ?
Je l’espère ! C’est sûr à 100% qu’un jour je ferai une tournée européenne, mais je ne peux pas vraiment dire quand pour l’instant. En tout cas, une agence de DJs française m’a contacté récemment, donc vous pouvez être sûrs que ça arrivera…

Ever since he appeared on the cover of Mixmag magazine, ABSOLUTE. has become a person to watch ! Inspired by the biggest names in the electronic music and especially the rave scene, the neon-haired DJ is quickly making his way to the top. With his new mixtape, Wonderland, he’s bringing a new dimension to the scene with emotive house, hard-edged techno and divine disco tracks. Let’s dive a bit deeper into his colourful world…
EN : Congratulations on your new release, your mixtape album Wonderland ! Can you tell us a bit about your inspiration when writing this? How did it come to life ?
It happened during the start of lockdown, I and many others felt like our creative drives were totally diminished. It felt like my carreer was about to go on another plane, I had just done a mix with my first Mixmag Lab and I was about to go on tour with 808 state, but then literaly the week-end this was coming, lockdown hit. So I was really deflated, I had no creative drive.. So I reached out to Mike Monday for a course. Doing that basically just reinvigorated my creative flow and i ended up writing 100 tracks in two weeks, which is just an insane amount of tracks. Probably the highest outpout I’ve ever put together so far !
“It became the seeds for the wonderland album. I felt like writing an album was the thing to put me through the pandemic. Being able to write music that made me feel free, and I felt like i was escaping or being part of something bigger again for a short while. To just feel the joy and euphoria again.. It was like an antidote to this whole thing.” He explains.
When I was writing the album, a weird coincidence happened – during that time I was writing lots of hardcore rave tracks, because I was truly drawn to that sound. I found out that the building that I was writing this music from used to be home for a legendary rave space called the Wonderland arena, which 30 years before, Franckie Knuckles, Carl Cox and the Prodigy would all play at ! During the peak days of rave, it was a cultural spot and a hot club in London. It was such a weird coincidence, it was almost like the energy from 30 years before was seeping through the walls… I had the opportunity to reinterpret this music for a new generation. I felt like the universe was telling me that I was on the right track.
It just became something for people to put on from start to finish, and create their own safe space and rave, wherever the dancefloor. I felt like this was so necessary considering the state of the world at the time. I’m excited to know that people are now able to listen to it in person, clubs and at festivals this summer !
You did a striking appearance on Mixmag’s cover. What was this experience like ? How did it help you as far as your carreer goes ?
The mixmag cover has always been on my bucket list. I knew I had to do it in my career. So I knew it was going to happen, but I had no idea it would happen so soon ! It was an incredible surprise and a real moral boost, because I was writing music during lockdown and I honestly didn’t know how this would be received. I didn’t know if people were going to care at all or just hear what I had to say… But it was such an incredible feeling to know that one of the biggest magazine in the world wants you on the cover because they heard your mixtape and they believed in it. It has obviously helped with bookings and with people taking me much more seriously as an artist. Also, giving space to queer artists on covers of magazine was really special…
Speaking about the LGBTQ+ scene, what do you feel activist artists like you bring to the world of electronic music and how people can benefit from your work ?
I think it’s about creating spaces where people can feel safe and comfortable, to be who they are without prejudice. I mean, I have bright yellow neon hair, which is kind of a reminder to myself to never deem your light and to never shrink for anyone ! The real fun always happen when everyone’s here, everyone’s genuine and comfortable, free and liberated…
Spotify asked you to curate a playlist for Pride month. You could only select 50 tracks. What were your inspirations ? Was there a message that you wanted to convey through this specific tracks choice and artist selection ?
Well, I wanted the playlist to have a flow, while being played from start to finish. For me it was taking inspiration from my time being a queer club promoter, but also being around (as well as part of) the queer community and the underground gay scene for a long time.
I wanted to create moments that would liberate people and transform moments into celebrations. More than ever knowing that we couldn’t see our friends and our chosen queer families. It’s important that we get to still take these moments in the way that we’re able to, and I hope that my music was able to add a bit of light to that.
“I want to try and create a positive impact while having fun at the same time and i think music is such a powerful tool : it’s empowered me so much. Being able to have an impact is something i’m proud of.” Says ABSOLUTE.
What are your plans for summer 2021 ? Do you have any exciting gigs you’re looking forward to being playing at ? Any festivals ?
I actually have a quite exciting program. A lot of things have been cancelled and moved, but I’ve done a guest mix with the Blessed Madonna, which is also part of our pride series. I’ve also made a mini mix for Annie Mac, to celebrate the Wonderland Arena and its history. I just did my debut live show at the Islington Assembly, which was also a very special and powerful moment for me. Again, it’s about writing and putting yourself out there at a period where we’re not allowed to be around eachother. It was a very scary time but I felt so much love and energy at the live show, it had a profound impact on me.
Coming up, there’s also a support show with Honey Dijon, the live tour with 808 state… I plan on doing a tour in America as well, but that will probably happen next year. FInally, I have shows in Scotland. I think I have things planned until september pretty much. I can’t wait to spread my colorful neon tornado !
Wow, busy program ! Are you nervous about going back to live shows ?
I was actually really nervous about my live shows. I’vs been djeing for a long time, I know how to smash a set. But the live show was something else, it was pretty scary. Now that that’s out of the way, i’m excited to start DJ gigs again ! I went to trans pride on saturday and it was quite overwhelming being around so many people, especially because some of them recognized me and asked for pictures… But I think I’m going to be okay ! Hopefuly by the time everything opens up again, I’ll just be excited to play music and being around people.
Do you plan on coming to france someday ?
I hope so ! 100% sure I’ll be touring around europe someday, but at the moment i don’t know when that will be. A french Dj agency just approached me, so you best believe there will be some stuff happenning.
